|The 427 is back! Actually the V-8 powering the fire-breathing 2006 Z06
Corvette displaces 427.6 cubic inches (7008cc), but 428 just doesn’t
sound right. Dubbed LS7, the Z06’s 7.0-liter monster is rated at 500
horsepower at 6200 rpm and 475 pound-feet of torque at 4800 rpm.
Compared with the LS2—the base C6 engine—the LS7 has a new block
with a bore of 4.13 inches and a stroke of 4.00 inches (versus 4.00-by-3.62
inches). Chevy engineers switched from the LS2’s cast-in-iron liners to
thinner pressed-in liners. Within the LS7 block, there’s a forged-steel
crankshaft, forged-steel main-bearing caps, titanium connecting rods,
and forged pistons. A dry-sump oiling system with an eight-quart
reservoir ensures proper lubrication of this long-stroke engine at its 7000-
rpm redline. The enormous output goes though a high-capacity clutch to
a beefed-up version of the Corvette’s six-speed, rear-mounted transaxle.
This power is planted to the pavement via rear 325/30ZR Goodyear Eagle
F1 Supercar run-flat tires, with front 275/35-18s pointing the nose in the
desired direction. All four fenders are flared to accommodate the
upgraded rubber, which is complemented by stiffer monotube shocks
and larger anti-roll bars. The signature transverse fiberglass leaf springs
are retained, but the front spring is stiffer than the one in the last-
generation Z06, and the rear spring is a bit softer, thanks to the C6’s
greater suspension travel. Naturally, there are bigger brakes all around.
Front rotors have grown from the base C6’s 12.8 inches in diameter to
14.0 inches; the rear rotors have increased from 12.0 to 13.4. Moreover,
these larger rotors are clamped by one-piece six-piston calipers up front
and four-piston units in the rear. To minimize weight, the Z06 features an
all-new frame with aluminum and magnesium components, and a
permanently fitted roof panel. Together, these measures reduce the
frame’s weight from 419 to 287 pounds. In addition, the front fenders are
from 9.2 to 2.8 pounds apiece. The balsa-core composite floorboard also
uses carbon fiber, saving five more pounds. Thanks to these changes, the
Z06 will weigh just over 3100 pounds. Chevy is predicting a 0-to-60 sprint
in less than four seconds, a quarter-mile in the high 11s, and a top speed
above 190 mph. Pricing STARTS AT $70,000.00 making this new Z06 the
most “affordable” supercar on the planet.
